Mount Washington Auto Road
The Mount Washington Auto Road, the first and oldest man-made attraction in the U.S., has offered friends and family alike over 150 years of adventure. Having opened to the public in 1861, the privately owned and operated Auto Road climbs 4,618 feet from the base and reaches more than a mile in the sky to the highest point in the Northeast at 6,288 feet.

The Mount Washington Auto Road allows guests to drive their own vehicle to the summit seasonally from late-May to late-October, weather permitting. Offering one of the most spectacular drives in the Northeast, this one-of-a-kind experience takes guests through four distinct climate zones.

Guided Tours with Scenic Views
Offered seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, guided tours of two to three hours are available. Dedicated tour guides enlighten guests with the true nature and history of Mount Washington and the Auto Road. Your “stage driver” will share anecdotes, legends, and history, allowing you to enjoy and experience the ecological wonder of Mount Washington. Guided tours allow for ample time to explore the historic 1853 Tip Top House or find unique gifts at the Summit Stage Office.
During the winter months, enjoy the breathtaking views of the protected Great Gulf Wilderness and the Presidential Mountain Range from the comfort and safety of a Mt. Washington SnowCoach. The SnowCoach departs from the base area of the Auto Road and then climbs 4.5 miles or two-thirds of the way to the summit. Once you arrive at the “Top of the Tour”, you may exit the SnowCoach for awe-inspiring photo and video opportunities. You may choose to ride the SnowCoach back to the base, or you have the option to snowshoe down.

Great Glen Trails, located at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, offers winter and summer activities and events for families, friends, and groups of all ages.
Kayaking: Gather friends and family for your choice of a relaxing river trip or thrilling whitewater adventure.
Biking: Well-marked trails lead you to a cabin to picnic or enjoy a snack break along the way. Bring your own or enjoy a rental bike.
Trail Running & Walking: Get fit while enjoying the adventure on their well-marked trails.
Cross Country Skiing: Great Glen Trails offers 45 kilometers of trails with 22 km groomed for classic and skate skiing - all right next door at the base of Mt. Washington.
Mt. Washington SnowCoach: Take a one-of-a-kind adventure to the tree line on Mt. Washington on the custom-designed Mt. Washington SnowCoach tour vehicle.
Snowshoeing: Snowshoe enthusiasts will love exploring the solitude of Great Glen Trails groomed or well-marked backcountry trails.
Snow Tubing: Offering the traditional walk up/slide down style hill, families can enjoy either all-day snow tubing or it comes included with your trail pass if you are skiing or snowshoeing.
Fat Biking: Available every day that snow conditions allow, explore the trails with your own fat bike or enjoy a rental bike.
