The most legendary drive in New England is the steep and breathtaking climb up the Mt. Washington Auto Road in New Hampshire. The road opened in August 1861 to stagecoaches, and this marks the summer of 2021 as the 160th year travelers have driven up 4,618 feet from the base, reaching more than a mile into the sky, the highest point in the Northeast at an altitude of 6,288 feet.

Happy. That seems to be the overriding mood in Pinkham Notch in New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Valley after a ride up Mount Washington. True, this is the packed bar of The Glen House hotel’s Notch Grille, a charming restaurant and tavern where a stone fireplace is aglow as wind chills temperatures outside to single digits. Two brave souls sit outside by the fire pit, because a rising waxing moon beautifully lights the mountains. But not for long. The following day happy smiling faces seem to be all around The Glen House. But, then, this boutique lodge 20 miles north of North Conway, is surrounded by the gleaming white cross country skiing trails of its sister property, Great Glen Trails. People are gleefully poling, gliding and sliding along. Some tromp along on snowshoes, eager for some back-to-nature time. No one is using the fat tire bikes today, but it is a comparatively quiet midweek and most skiers are locals who, I was told, hit the trails every day.
