Mt. Washington Auto Road
The Mt. Washington Auto Road, the first and oldest man-made attraction in the U.S., has offered friends and family alike over 150 years of adventure. Having opened to the public in 1861, the privately owned and operated Auto Road climbs 4,618 feet from the base and reaches more than a mile in the sky to the highest point in the Northeast at 6,288 feet.
From Base to Summit, Find Adventure at Every Turn:
- Enjoy a two or three hour guided tour or Drive Yourself
- Scenic pull-offs with amazing views
- Take short walks and scenic hikes at the base or from marked areas along the Auto Road
- Discover rare alpine flowers and birds
- Travel through four different ecological zones
- Tour the Red Barn Museum at the base with historic Auto Road displays and antique vehicles on display - free!
- Enjoy scenic trail biking at the base at Great Glen Trails or take a guided kayak tour and search for wildlife.
During the winter months, enjoy the breathtaking views of the protected Great Gulf Wilderness and the Presidential Mountain Range from the comfort and safety of a Mt. Washington SnowCoach. The SnowCoach departs from the base area of the Auto Road and then climbs 4.5 miles or two-thirds of the way to the summit. Once you arrive at the “Top of the Tour”, you may exit the SnowCoach for awe-inspiring photo and video opportunities. You may choose to ride the SnowCoach back to the base, or you have the option to snowshoe down. Tours are offered daily, weather permitting, and begin at 9 AM. Tickets are available by reservation.
Offered seasonally from late-May through late-October, guided tours of two to three hours are available. Dedicated tour guides enlighten guests with the true nature and history of Mount Washington and the Auto Road. Your “stage driver” will share anecdotes, legends, and history, allowing you to enjoy and experience the ecological wonder of Mount Washington. Guided tours allow for ample time to explore the historic 1853 Tip Top House or find unique gifts at the Summit Stage Office. Your guided tour also includes admission to the Sherman Adams Visitor Center and the Mount Washington Observatory’s “Extreme Mt. Washington Museum”. Reservations are recommended.
The Mount Washington Auto Road allows guests to drive their own vehicle to the summit seasonally from late-May to late-October, weather permitting. Offering one of the most spectacular drives in the Northeast, this one-of-a-kind experience takes guests through four distinct climate zones. Experience the constantly changing weather and panoramic views at your own pace while listening to the audio tour provided. When you are done, you will earn the coveted “This Car Climbed Mount Washington” bumper sticker.
