Our four-season destination on the campus of the Mt. Washington Auto Road and Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center allows our guests front door access to a variety of recreational activities. When you stay at The Glen House during any season, several of these activities are included in your stay or provided at a discount when you book direct with us. All activities are weather dependent and subject to availability. Mt. Washington Auto Road

The Mt. Washington Auto Road, the first and oldest man-made attraction in the U.S., has offered friends and family alike over 150 years of adventure. Having opened to the public in 1861, the privately owned and operated Auto Road climbs 4,618 feet from the base and reaches more than a mile in the sky to the highest point in the Northeast at 6,288 feet.

Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center

Great Glen Trails, located at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, offers winter and summer activities and events for families, friends, and groups of all ages. The trails are just across the street from the Glen House and have 45 km of trails for walking, hiking and trail biking. You can enjoy the Great Glen Trails throughout all the seasons. 

Enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed and well-marked trails during the winter. During the summer friends and family can enjoy picnics, kayaking, biking, trail running and walking.

Guided Tours

Offered seasonally from late-May through late-October, guided tours of two to three hours are available. Dedicated tour guides enlighten guests with the true nature and history of Mount Washington and the Auto Road. Your “stage driver” will share anecdotes, legends, and history, allowing you to enjoy and experience the ecological wonder of Mount Washington. Guided tours allow for ample time to explore the historic 1853 Tip Top House or find unique gifts at the Summit Stage Office. Your guided tour also includes admission to the Sherman Adams Visitor Center and the Mount Washington Observatory’s “Extreme Mt. Washington Museum”. Reservations are recommended.

Drive Yourself

The Mount Washington Auto Road allows guests to drive their own vehicle to the summit seasonally from late-May to late-October, weather permitting. Offering one of the most spectacular drives in the Northeast, this one-of-a-kind experience takes guests through four distinct climate zones. Experience the constantly changing weather and panoramic views at your own pace while listening to the audio tour provided. When you are done, you will earn the coveted "This Car Climbed Mount Washington" bumper sticker.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road offers several events and fundraisers from late-May through mid-September. From the Bicknell's Thrush Tours, to Ride to the Sky, and Sunrise Drives, there is sure to be an event for everyone.
