Hiking, Leaf-Peeping & Endless Views in
New Hampshire’s White Mountains
August 23, 2022. Green’s Grant, NH. New Hampshire’s White Mountains are one of the best places to view fall foliage in the United States. The festival of color starts in mid-September and runs through mid-October, a full month of spectacular color that is routinely ranked the most dramatic display in the country.
For those who plan to take a hike and go leaf-peeping in those dramatic mountains, the ideal destination is The Glen House, the 68-room property at the foot of Mt. Washington. Surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, with glorious views of the Presidential Range, the property boasts all of the creature comforts that ensure a perfect autumn getaway.
The hotel’s new Fall in Love package offers a two-night stay, a fall time treat from Zeb's in North Conway, two fall cocktails from the bar, a plush blanket to cozy up around the outdoor fire pit and $10 off the best available rate.
The deck of The Glen House, with its fire pit and endless views of the Presidential Range, is the perfect place to savor an Auto Road Ale from Tuckerman Brewing Company and take in the red and yellow foliage. The bar has been named “The Most Beautiful Bar in New Hampshire” by Architectural Digest and the hotel’s restaurant, The Notch Grille, has a menu of family-friendly comfort food best enjoyed on the deck. The indoor salt water swimming pool is a great place to soak after a day of exploring in the White Mountains.
Hiking Boots, Mountain Bikes and 100-Mile Views
The Glen House is surrounded by 45 kilometers of walking, hiking and biking paths and guests can get outfitted at The Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, which lies across the road from the hotel and offers 45 km of trails for walking, hiking and trail biking. The terrain is rated easy to moderate, and it’s ideal for family trail riding on hybrids and has more challenging terrain for those on mountain bikes and fat bikes, which can all be rented on site.
Adjacent to the hotel is the start of the legendary Mt. Washington Auto Road, which offers a breathtaking alpine drive to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast. Considered the first and oldest man-made attraction in the U.S., the road opened more than 150 years ago and tops out at a 6,288 foot summit. On a clear day, there are views that extend more than 100 miles to the Atlantic Ocean and into six states. There’s a self-drive option and also guided van tours.
