We’re staying at The Glen House Hotel (theglenhouse.com, 603-466-3420) in Gorham, at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road. Dating back to 1852, the hotel was completely rebuilt for the fourth time in 2018, this time with a geothermal climate control system and other sustainable features. The heart of this dog-friendly hotel is a spacious-yet-cozy lobby and lounge with soaring ceilings, an enormous stone fireplace, and a wall of windows overlooking the peaks of the Presidential Range. The space, which Architectural Digest named the most beautiful bar in the Granite State, strikes a charming note between modern and rustic: A patchwork-quilt moose head hangs above the hearth. We play board games by the roaring fire, watch the snowy summit of Mount Washington turn gold in the late afternoon sun, and order dinner and local craft beers from the bar. Of course, our daughter is most impressed by the indoor saltwater pool and the vacation-only novelty of watching TV in bed — the morning of our adventure, she preps with a dog-sledding episode of Molly of Denali on PBS. For a more active morning, the adjacent Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center (greatglentrails.com, 603-466-3988) offers miles of trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking, plus equipment rentals. (Outdoor activities are available as usual, with some COVID precautions in place — masks are required in the equipment rental lodge.)

The snow is already falling in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where New Englanders have traditionally headed for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snow shoeing. I have a thing with Mount Washington. It's been going on since I was a child and my family vacationed in the area at a resort in the mountain's valley. From there we could hear Jackson Falls and look out across the White Mountains. It was delightful. But we could not see Mount Washington directly.

On a recent winter morning, in this Presidential year, I had the pleasure of waking up to a dramatic view of snow-covered Mt. Adams, Mt. Madison and Mt. Washington, the latter the highest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet. On this particular New Hampshire morning, it was a bluebird sky that greeted me, with subzero temps and relatively light winds in the White Mountains.

At the base of Mt. Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, The Glen House has opened as a new 68-room eco-conscious hotel. The original Glen House opened in 1852, followed by three more iterations until the present hotel opened late in 2018. BMA Architects & Planners of Amherst, N.H., used clapboards and shakes on the exterior—albeit HardiePlank Lap Siding and Hardie Plank Shakes, made of fiber cement, with white trim in a style similar to its predecessors.

GREEN’S GRANT, NH. Yankee Magazine has named The Glen House, the 68-room boutique hotel that opened last September at the base of Mt. Washington, the Best New Hotel in New Hampshire 2019. The award was given as part of the publication’s annual Best of New Hampshire| 2019 Editor’s Choice Awards. “Come for the view—a wall of windows in the lounge offers a Presidential Range panorama—and stay for the creature comforts at this new 68-room hotel at the base of Mount Washington,” say the magazine’s editors. The Glen House, they agree, is “a new must-visit destination in the Whites.” Owned by the Mt. Washington Summit Road Company (MWSRC) and managed by Olympia Hotel Management, The Glen House is just 30 minutes from North Conway and situated near the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, which the family-owned MWSRC has operated since 1906.

Wildcat in the White Mountains is the place for skiers who are looking to maximize their time on the slopes. The resort is known for short or barely existent lift lines even in the winter, so come the spring skiing season—which generally lasts through mid- to late April—you can be sure to get in an impressive number of runs. The mountain sits within a national forest and has narrower-than-average trails, with most of the runs friendly for skiers of all abilities. The best part if you’re a total ski bum? It’s totally no-frills.

The Glen House, a newly constructed 68-room hotel at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road, may technically be one of the newer structures in the region, but its roots run deep in the White Mountains. The new hotel, built by construction management firm Martini Northern, of Portsmouth, is the fifth iteration of The Glen House to stand near the site of the original, which opened in 1852 to visitors flocking to the Northeast’s highest peak. The new, stately structure, which opened to the public on Sept. 12, pays homage to its predecessors by including aspects of its previous incarnations, offering a classic look in a bucolic setting.

We all know that one of New Hampshire's greatest assets is the cider doughnut: crispy on the outside, best paired with a hot apple cider or hard cider. Farms and roadside stands across the state offer samples and tastings (some, like Meadow Ledge Farm, command 45-minute waits for a doughnut). Consider a trek up to White Mountain Cider Company for dinner and dessert of warm cider doughnuts and ice cream, and overnight at the new Glen House hotel at the base of Mount Washington.

PINKHAM NOTCH — The soon-to-open Glen House Hotel will be the fifth by that name in the general vicinity of the Mount Washington Auto Road. All four of its predecessors burned, with the last consumed by fire in 1967. In 1851, the Grand Trunk Railway was completed from Portland, Maine, to Gorham. Tourist traffic increased dramatically. In 1851, John Bellows began to remodel a farmhouse into a hotel on the site of what would become the Glen House. Although his building was not completed, he did take in some tourists that season.
